I am an academic and writer whose work focuses on the representation of the nonhuman in fiction and the potential impact such fiction has on the reader’s relationship with nature. I have a PhD in environmental literature and my research investigates the nonhuman in Australian literature, speculative and science fiction, climate fiction, and crime fiction, and draws on theory relating to ecocriticism, multispecies studies, narrative persuasion and reader response. My interests also extend to other popular genre fiction, such as horror, romance and fantasy. My research and writing has been published in JASAL, Extrapolation, Guardian Australia, Overland, Australian Geographic and Antithesis, amongst others.
I am passionate about teaching literature and am currently a sessional academic at La Trobe University, Deakin University and the University of Melbourne, with experience teaching postcolonial literature, fantasy literature, modernism and postmodernism, children’s and young adult literature, professional writing and more. I have also worked across a variety of projects in literary studies and the environmental humanities as a research assistant.
I am a co-founder, board member and the previous publications manager of Remember The Wild, an environmental charity focused on engaging everyday Australians with nature. My work there has involved collaborating with a variety of organisations and institutions, including Monash University, Parks Victoria, Bush Heritage, CSIRO Publishing and Zoos Victoria.
I have eight years of experience working in the Australian independent book trade, which has helped fuel my love for Australian literary culture.
I live and work on unceded Dja Dja Wurrung land.
